Jessica Care Moore, an award-winning poet from Detroit, will return to her hometown to present a brand new performance called Salt City.
Salt City is inspired by salt mines beneath Detroit, and the whole performance is set in the future. The main character is a traveler who arrives to the future, trying to reclaim the history of her family. The central themes of the performance are displacement and identity. Moore admitted that gentrification was her main inspiration for Salt City.
Several actors from Spelman College with Moorehouse spent over four years perfecting the entire show before they managed to win the grant that allowed them to produce Salt City.
While Jessica Care Moore said that she has plans to bring the show to different cities, it was essential for her that it debuted in Detroit.
Salt City premiered on Thursday the 13th at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
